Azul Beach, June 2012 – Day 1

Amy McHugh (co-owner of Dream Makers Vacation Services) and Carra Hoober (Assistant) are traveling to the beautiful Riviera Maya, Mexico, to experience several resorts.

We got an early start in order to be in Mexico early. Once we landed at the Cancun airport, customs and security were very quick and it was off to Azul Beach, where we are staying. We had made a reservation for a van for the transfer from the airport to the hotel – and we got a Lincoln Navigator instead (booked through Lomas travel)! It was roomy, clean, and a great perk.

At Azul Beach we were met personally by a concierge and directed to check-in, where we were offered a wet towel and a cold glass of champagne. The sales manager, Azucena Ortiz, also came out to welcome us. We decided to have lunch right away at the restaurant Blue, which serves world cuisine. Amy had chicken with rice and vegetables, and I (Carra) had a chicken panini. Both were very good and cooked the way we specified. They also brought us the "water of the day". Each day they have a different flavored water available. Today was melon water - yum!

After lunch we went to our room. We are staying in a Honeymoon Suite, room 816. The room has two double beds, and also a patio, an in-room bar and a beautiful bathroom with a huge jacuzzi tub and separate shower. We relaxed for a bit and had smoothies at the snack bar, La Mancha Energetic Bar. Amy’s was called Powerful and was a blend of banana, chocolate, and granola. I had a Madagascar, which was a blend of different tropical fruits. They were VERY good!

We spent the afternoon at Azul Sensatori, another great resort from the Karisma brand, taking a tour of the resort and having dinner. We even got to watch a few minutes of a gorgeous destination wedding. Dinner was great – truly Gourmet Inclusive. We ate at the Mexican restaurant Zocalo. We tried different dishes, like ‘sizzlers’ (sizzling plates of meat and potatoes with corn tortillas), potato soup, desserts, and an appetizer made with cheese and meat rolled in tortillas. We also tried a few of the mixed drinks, one was the mango margarita. The other drink was a mix of Kahlua, coffee, vanilla ice cream, and a local flower liquor. It is called a Mayan Coffee, and we highly recommend it. It was lit on fire several times during the mixing! Neither Amy nor I like coffee, but did like this drink.
