I, Kayla, recently did a site-inspection of Grand Velas Riviera Maya in Mexico. I arrived in the morning at the Zen lobby and was met by Jorge Ruiz, site-inspection manager at Grand Velas. Grand Velas is an all-inclusive, family friendly resort located approximately 35 minutes from the Cancun International Airport. The resort is made up of three different sections: the Zen, the Ambassador, and the Grand Class. The Zen section is furthest from the ocean and is in the middle of the jungle. It is very quiet and has a relaxed atmosphere. The Zen section has 254 suites that are spacious, have hot tubs, private terraces, and have views of the jungle or koi fish pond. This section of the resort also has its own pool for guests to enjoy. There is an International and Asian restaurant in the Zen section as well. To get to the Ambassador and Grand Class sections, you need to take a shuttle. Shuttle service operates 24 hours a day and comes in 5 minutes or less. The ride from the Zen section to the other two sections is about 3 minutes. When you arrive in the Ambassador section, the atmosphere is slightly different than the Zen. There are more people around and there is more activity going on. The Ambassador section is made up of 195 spacious suites with private terraces/balconies. These suites surround the main infinity pool and are near the fitness center, Kid’s Club, and Teen’s Club. The Grand Class is also in this part of the resort but is for adults only. There are 90 suites in the Grand Class section. This section has the other six restaurants, as well as a piano bar and karaoke bar.

I was able to have an Ambassador Queen suite for the day. This room was on the bottom floor and had a terrace that you could walk out onto and across the grass to the infinity pool. The infinity pool is split into three different sections, each with a different water temperature. There is a swim-up bar and also food & drink service around the pool. I was able to sit in the pool and a waiter brought a drink right to me. This was an awesome service that Grand Velas offers and I took full advantage of it. The beach at Grand Velas is also very nice with white sand and plenty of beach chairs & umbrellas to relax under.

I also went to one of the buffet restaurants, Azul, for lunch. They had many different options of food like a quesadilla & taco station, a sandwich station, fresh fruit, homemade chips, cheese, dessert, and much more. Everything that I had was really good and I liked the variety that they had available. I also went to the Italian restaurant, Lucca, for dinner. The restaurant itself is beautiful and has large windows that provide beautiful views of the jungle surrounding the resort. I went there just as the sun was setting so it was really pretty. The menu for Lucca is traditional Italian and they actually import the ingredients for the food directly from Italy. I think that it was some of the best Italian food I have ever had. The service and atmosphere in the restaurant were great, and they even had a live saxophone player come in to entertain.

Grand Velas offers activities for both adults and children on property. Along with the bars, Kid’s Club, and Teen’s Club, they also have different activities going on around the resort during the day. I watched some guests of all ages participate in pool aerobics and salsa lessons. Everyone looked like they were having fun and the staff was really good about getting people up and moving. The resort also offers things for infants so parents traveling with babies don’t have to pack all kinds of additional things for them. They have strollers, bibs, toys, cribs, and more all available for convenience when traveling with infants. You can also enjoy The Spa at Grand Velas. The spa is one of the greatest in Central & South America and offers many different treatments, therapies, and other services. These would be at an additional cost and aren’t included in the hotel pricing.

I really enjoyed spending the day at Grand Velas Riviera Maya. All three sections of the resort are beautiful and have a calming atmosphere, making it easy to lay back & relax.  The food was excellent, the staff was attentive & professional, and the property was stunning. It is a resort that adults and children alike would really enjoy, and there is something for everyone on property.
